Legos are toys, but they inspire amazing designs. LEGO artists use small plastic bricks to design everything from robots to architecture. Even the engineers at the company develop new elements that allow builders to build more complex models. Erik Varszegi is a Master Builder at the Lego Group, Billund, Denmark. He came up with the new element for this year, namely the curving slope. It allows Lego users to create more slanted designs while adhering to the company’s strict colour palette. The slopes can also be used to create more dynamic shapes like the curving staircase.
Certain Lego sets are the result of professional designers’ work, while others are the result of the popular Lego Ideas program. The Ideas line lets anyone design a set and it can be produced. It offers fame and 1% of sales for anyone who convinces a crowd of 10,000 people that their work is worthy of being be created. It’s not a surprise that the most elaborate and stunning sets are the ones that receive the most praise, especially when they have iconic characters or scenes from films and television shows or in real life.
Two space icons are among the best Lego models including the NASA shuttle Discovery and the Hubble Telescope model. Each model comes with display plaques and a tiny Lego replica of the scientist that designed the telescope. Other impressive models include a frame Rainbow, a Steampunk Dragon, and a model of Westminster Palace.
